After a Year of Motherhood, Here’s What I Wish I Had Added to My Baby Registry

I am celebrating a year of motherhood and reflecting on what I have learned that I can share with my audience, especially new and expecting mothers. If there’s one thing this year has taught me, it’s that no registry—no matter how many hours you spend perfecting it—can fully prepare you for what motherhood actually asks of you.

When I built my registry, I did what most first-time moms do. I researched and read the “top ten must-haves” lists. I asked friends and my community. And still, there were gaps I didn’t discover until I was in the flow of it all: feedings, stroller walks with nowhere to put my phone or coffee, and a baby who knew what she liked and didn’t like.

I hosted my registry on Babylist, and their system does a great job guiding you through what you need across every category, which meant I followed the blueprint of what’s common and necessary—the basics that show up on every list for a reason. What I didn’t account for were the extras: the options I’d wish I had in the rare moments they were actually needed, or as my baby grew and changed with each new milestone.

So in honor of this first year, I wanted to do something different than the typical “here’s what I bought” post. These are the products I would add to my registry if I were starting over—shaped by a year of actually living through it, not just imagining how it’s going to go. A select few are brand partners I’ve had the privilege of collaborating with. All of them are things I would tell a friend, a community member, or a close connection to add to her own list.

Here’s what I wish I’d known about!

The On-the-Go Essentials I Didn’t Know I Needed

Most strollers don’t come with an organizer, or even a cup holder—which feels like an oversight the moment you’re three blocks from your car with a diaper bag, a phone, and a fussy baby all competing for your two free hands.

If you’re an expecting mom weighing whether to add a stroller caddy to your registry, add it. You may not reach for it in the newborn haze, but the second you’re out and about or traveling, you’ll wonder how you managed without it.

The Itzy Ritzy Stroller Organizer became one of our quiet essentials. What I love about it:

We added a traditional baby carrier to our registry, expecting it to be a go-to. Our baby had other plans. She never quite took to it, and as she grew (and grew in the 99th percentile), she outgrew what a traditional wrap or carrier could comfortably support anyway.

I registered for Coterie diaper and wipes bundles early on, and they carried us for a few months. But once that supply ran out, we found ourselves making store runs to supplement with other brands that just weren’t the same quality.

Looking back, I wish I had added both to my registry as an option for financial support, rather than absorbing that cost once we were already in the thick of it. What I love about them:

• One less thing to plan and prep during an already full season

The Developmental Toys I Wish I Hadn’t Skipped

Toys were one of the few categories I intentionally kept light on our registry. I wanted to take an intuitive approach—to feel into what my baby actually gravitated toward rather than filling our shelves with things she may never reach for. Looking back, that instinct served us well in most areas, but there’s one exception I wish I had made room for, even though we still haven’t tried it ourselves.

So much of registry culture is built around preparing for the baby, and so little of it makes room for preparing for the mother she’s asking you to become. This is a topic I’ll be exploring further as part of my future family planning content, so consider this a preview of a conversation I’m not finished having.

What This Year Actually Taught Me

If you’re building your registry right now, here’s what I’d tell you: you don’t need to predict every version of your baby. You just need enough flexibility, comfort, and support built in to meet whichever version shows up.

A year in, I’ve stopped measuring readiness by what was on my registry. What actually carried us through wasn’t the list I checked off—it was the willingness to keep adjusting, keep asking for what we needed, and keep showing up for a baby who was teaching us in real time who she was. That’s the part no registry can hand you. You build it as you go, right alongside your baby.
