First Birthday Gift Ideas They’ll Keep Loving Past Year One

Somewhere between the biggest chapter of my life and the ever-changing milestones, I blinked, and then I planned a party for my one-year-old. The newborn we brought home is now a scooting, babbling little gal with big, wonderful feelings. I love every bit of her goofy personality. (Hold onto every tiny detail: the toys, the sleepers, all of it. It goes fast.)

As we celebrated our baby’s first trip around the sun, I kept asking the question every parent asks when they plan a party and choose gifts: which first birthday gifts actually get used? I don’t mean the things that look pretty in a nursery for a few months. I mean the ones that become part of your daily rhythm. The ones that become staples for family time. It’s the same intentional-over-trendy approach I bring to everything on Simply Ashley Graham.

Here’s my recommendation list, organized by theme and built from the wishlist we made for our baby’s birthday. Whether you’re building your own wishlist, shopping for a niece or godchild, or jotting down notes for your one-year-old, I hope it’s a helpful starting point.

A few of these are grow-into-it picks. I’ve marked them with age notes so you can plan ahead.

Note: Brands gifted us some of the items below as part of a collaboration. Family and friends gave us the rest from our registry. I carefully selected each item because I believe it fits this guide. Some links in this article are affiliate links, which means I may earn a commission if you choose to purchase, helping me keep sharing intentional, inspirational content like this.

Books for Story Time

Our baby loves story time, and it’s become one of my favorite parts of the day. We read to our baby girl about three times a day, so the books we choose get real use. If you want a gift that lasts well past the first year, start here.

On the Night Before You Turn One by Kristie Graves (Familius)

This one is written for the parent doing the reading. I read it to my daughter the night before she turned one, and it gave me a quiet moment to reflect on my own year as well as hers. Rhyming text from Graves and sweet illustrations by Gregorio De Lauretis follow the whole first year, from birth to the eve of the first birthday. Fair warning: you will get a little teary at bedtime. The book traces the full arc of the year, so it means even more each time you pull it out on a future birthday. If you add one keepsake to your list, make it this one.

Words That Go Series by Jess Hannigan (Sourcebooks)

This bold, funny board book series swaps the usual baby sound effects for something unique and more delightful. The books hold up to dozens of reads, which matters when your one-year-old picks the same book five times in a row. The bright, graphic illustrations support early visual tracking and word association, so they do developmental work while reading like pure fun. At first, my daughter always reached for Words That Go EEE because the cover is bright red. Now she loves to sit with all of them side by side and flip through the pages on her own. It’s special to watch how curious she is about them. I can’t wait until she starts saying the words out loud as we read.

My First Learn-to-Talk Books by Stephanie Cohen (Sourcebooks)

Around twelve months, babbling starts turning into real words, and this series is built for that stage. The simple, labeled pages give your baby something concrete to point at and repeat, so it earns its keep for months instead of getting outgrown right away. It has become a fun way for my daughter and me to mimic the images in sight and sound. It didn’t happen right away, but after a few weeks of reading these books, she now waves hello and goodbye more. They make a great addition to the bookcase!

My Calm Down Book by Rose Rossner (Sourcebooks)

A gentle one, and a grow-into-it pick. The book is recommended for ages 4 to 8, but I love starting the habit early. Each page walks through science-based ways to self-soothe and build emotional safety. Reading through big feelings before your baby can even name them makes the practice familiar before you ever need it as a tool. It’s a quiet gift, and one that pays off later. I often sit down with my daughter to look at it, and she loves to touch the pages and their sensory elements.

Age note: recommended for ages 4 to 8, so think of this as a book to read together now and grow into.

Naptime and Sleep

Gunamuna Matching Nap Mat, Crib Sheet, and Sleep Sack

A matching sleep set makes the whole nap and night routine feel intentional, and it makes naptime photos a little more beautiful too. What I love about Gunamuna is that you can get one design across a crib sheet, a sleep sack, and a nap mat that’s great for travel. We chose the Tutu Goose print because it’s cute and unique.

The nap mat is the piece I’m most excited about. It will be our perfect travel companion. It’s made with soft bamboo rayon, and it comes with a mat that doubles as a blanket or sleeping bag, plus a pillow insert. All of Gunamuna’s fabrics are OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, which means they’re tested to be free of harmful chemicals and irritants. We always look for that. This is the kind of gift I’d buy for my child and love to receive: pretty enough to photograph, practical enough to use every day. It’s a great pick for a registry or a first birthday.

Outdoor and Adventure Gear

Bombi Waggle Folding Stroller Wagon

This is one of our favorite pieces of gear this year, and a real contender for best first birthday gift overall. The Waggle is a patent-pending hybrid, part travel stroller and part adventure wagon. It’s one of the smallest folding wagons on the market, which matters when you’re trying to fit an entire toddler life into a trunk. It holds up to 110 lbs and has a 3-point safety harness. It also has a walkthrough, so once she’s walking, our little one can climb in and out on her own.

We added the dual canopy in mocha, snack trays on both sides, and the dual basket in mocha. It has changed how often we get out of the house, because it makes leisure time so simple. Most wagons are enormous, and the Waggle’s compact fold solves that. It’s also a great group gift, since family members can split the cost.

Tiny Land One-Stop Beach Toy & Tent Set, and Blanket and Mat

These pieces remove every excuse to skip an outing. The Beach Tent packs the shade. The Tiny Land Sand Toys are the perfect beach toys. The Blanket and Mat give you a clean spot to sit. The beach tent is recommended for ages 1 and up, so it’s ready for our baby’s first official summer (or in California, all year round). It’s an easy add for a spring or summer birthday, and it lives in the trunk all season. It won’t be the “big” registry item, but it’s the one you’ll use. We haven’t used the beach tent yet, but it’s waiting in the car for the perfect day! We use the mat often, and each time it makes me happy that I added it to our wishlist.

Open-Ended and Developmental Play

Solobo Toys Emotional Baggage

I wanted this gift before our daughter even arrived. I deeply believe in the Montessori approach and in giving kids tools for emotional development, not just cognitive milestones, so this fit our home. Most emotional-development toys target preschoolers, and it’s rare to find one for the one-year-old stage. It introduces the language and visuals of feelings early, well before she can talk about them. My baby is still young, so I simply hold up each plush, tell her the name of the emotion, and lightly describe the feeling it shows.

I’ll write more about raising kids with this kind of intention over on The Conscious Edit. Subscribe to my newsletter to stay up to date on new articles!

Tiny Land Toddler Sofa

My vision for this one was always the perfect little reading chair. It sits next to her bookcase, so someday she can pick a book, climb up, and settle in on her own. Right now, it’s mostly something sweet to look at and picture. It’s recommended for ages 3 and up, so we’re letting her grow into it. Once she’s walking, I’m looking forward to showing her how to sit and get down safely, with me right beside her.

Tabitha Paige Farm Animals Chunky Wooden Puzzle

Chunky wooden puzzles are a first birthday classic for a reason. The thick pine pieces are easy for small hands to grip. The farm animals give you an excuse to make animal sounds together. (My daughter loves it when I make the sounds, and she’s so close to copying me!) Unlike plastic, a well-made wooden puzzle can pass down to the next child. The watercolor art makes it a keepsake, too.

Age note: this puzzle is recommended for ages 18 months and up. We had it ready for her first birthday and let her explore it with supervision, since the matching and naming play comes later.

A few ways to play together:

  • Name and Find: Name each animal and match it to its shape
  • Sound Play: Make the sound beneath each animal
  • Story Time: Flip it over to the barn scene for imaginative play
  • Fine Motor Fun: Practice grasping, placing, and turning each piece

Tabitha Paige Crinkle Book for Sensory Exploration

If you want a gift that’s gentle, cozy, and made for tiny hands, this is it. This soft, black-and-white crinkle book features Tabitha Paige’s hand-painted animal art and fold-out flaps for peek-and-play. It’s made with organic cotton and designed for sensory exploration from birth to age two, so it’s one of the few picks here that fits a first birthday perfectly. The crinkle sound encourages listening, and the high-contrast visuals support focus. It bridges newborn sensory toys and story time books. Because it’s fabric instead of plastic, it holds up to chewing and dragging around the house. It’s also soothing for independent play in the crib or car seat.

Building Your Own Registry or Wishlist

If you’re curating a registry or wishlist for your baby’s first birthday, my best advice is to choose gifts that fit how your baby actually spends the day. Don’t choose based on what looks good in a nursery flat-lay or on social media. Aim for something to read, something to grow into, something to learn with, and something that’s just for you and your child.

This guide grows with us. New finds will be spotlighted here as inspiration arises, so check back for more first-birthday finds. Bookmark this page and pop back in. Have a gift your baby loves? Tell me in the comments!
