Breaking Free from Conformity to Tell Your Human-Centric Story
Other people’s expectations, engagement metrics, and constant comparison… oh my! Finding the courage to break free from conformity to tell your human-centric story has never been more vital as we continue to see duplicate content created over and over, time and time again. Throughout my 14-year journey in the thought leadership space, I’ve lived through countless versions of myself—watching my perspective evolve alongside my personal and business identities. What sparked this recent awakening? It’s all thanks to the profound reflections that come with transitioning into motherhood, especially as a woman in business—a high-achieving woman.
When you become a mother, your identity transforms in ways you never imagined. You shift from living life through one set of routines, cycles, and milestones to suddenly putting the needs of this precious little life before your own. You support them through all that you have to give, and then somehow, you find even more to give. Sure, you can plan and prep and try to follow someone else’s path to the birth journey or parenthood—but here’s the truth: your experience will never be identical to anyone else’s. It’s uniquely, beautifully yours.
The same applies to birthing your human-centric story and embracing the identity shifts required to become your fully expressive self. It takes courage to give your all to the story and message you are destined to tell—especially when doing so means breaking away from the comfortable conformity of what everyone else is doing.
When I launched this platform, I wrote a quote that captures the essence of real creation, especially when it comes to thought leadership and storytelling:
“Your human-centric story starts with the courage to break free from conformity and embrace your true identity.”
Let’s explore what that means…
Your Human-Centric Story—Born Through Evolution, Not Conformity
This quote has been echoing in my mind lately as I honor all the past versions of myself I’ve encountered. I’ve been metaphorically laying bouquets at the feet of who I once was, recognizing how each chapter of my story—authentic, messy, and uniquely mine—has shaped the narrative I’m now empowered to share. After experiencing two pregnancy losses in 2024, my partner and I received the beautiful news in November that we’re expecting again. Our baby girl is due this August, and this transition has become the perfect metaphor for what happens when we allow our human-centric stories to evolve naturally.
As expecting mothers know, pregnancy triggers deep contemplation about our identities. We reflect on the versions of ourselves we’ve known and the experiences we’ve navigated. This introspection has illuminated a powerful truth— authentic thought leadership emerges when we embrace our evolving stories rather than conforming to fixed expectations. The parallels between creating new life and creating authentic thought leadership are striking. Both require vulnerability, follow their own timeline, and are impossible to script according to someone else’s template.
My journey into motherhood has rekindled my passion for human-centric storytelling precisely because both demand we show up as our true selves—not as polished, engagement-friendly versions of who others expect us to be.
Thought Leadership as an Act of Liberation
What makes thought leadership such a powerful force is its inherent invitation to bring our human-centric story to the narrative. It creates space not just for our experiences but for our unique perspective—free from conformity to others’ expectations of what thought leadership should look or sound like in a copy-paste space.
As a non-conformist at heart (can you relate?), I’ve always been drawn to this space because it embraces our ever-evolving identity. We are not static beings—we change, grow, and transform through different seasons and experiences. Our perspectives shift as we gather new wisdom and insight. Our voices strengthen as we face new challenges and contrasts.
Right now, I’m preparing for one of life’s most significant transitions: bringing new life into the world while maintaining my identity as a multi-passionate creative. I have looked to this evolution not as threatening my voice—it’s amplifying it in ways I never imagined possible. The timelines where I share my human-centric story may shift and come with delays, but what I desire to share will always find its time and place.
From my perspective, this is why I love thought leadership. Thought leadership allows my message to evolve as I evolve, as it’s meant to evolve, which is precisely why I’ve loved being in this space for so long. There’s a special liberation in rejecting the pressure to be consistent with everyone else and instead choosing to be consistent with your truth—even as that truth grows and changes.
When algorithms reward sameness and metrics celebrate conformity, telling your story your way becomes quietly revolutionary. It’s a declaration that your human-centric journey matters precisely because it doesn’t fit neatly into someone else’s framework or timeline.
Finding Your Voice in Transition—The Magic of Intuitive Storytelling
Pregnancy has been quite a journey, but it has gifted me with remarkable pockets of clarity and energy. Over these past five months, I’ve discovered a more profound passion for helping others unlock their human-centric stories in ways that break free from conformity. It’s as if this transition into motherhood has heightened my ability to see the untold stories within others—perhaps because I’m witnessing the unfolding of my new chapter.
My guest spotlight interviews for the podcast have awakened a new direction for The Conscious Publicist—one that excites me tremendously. While I’m not quite ready to share all the details, this evolution will allow me to maintain sustainability in my business during my transition to motherhood while honoring my deeper purpose: helping others authentically tell their stories.
There are many ways to tell our human-centric stories, but podcasting has become my canvas of choice. This medium has not only given me space to share my evolving narrative but also blessed me with the opportunity to help others uncover and amplify theirs.
What’s been most fulfilling about hosting these guest spotlights is witnessing these remarkable women embody the essence of owning their true identities. Each has looked at the world through her unique lens, identified what was missing, and created brands, businesses, and initiatives that fill those voids—not by following formulas but by trusting their distinctive vision. They’re living proof of what happens when you break free from conformity and embrace your authentic story.
My Unique Approach to Human-Centric Storytelling on The Conscious Publicist® Podcast
My approach to these conversations intentionally breaks from the podcast playbook you’re probably familiar with. Rather than following a rigid format with pre-scripted questions, I create space for “intuitive connection.” I ask one question that opens the portal: “What story are you looking to tell through your brilliance and wisdom?“
Then, something magical happens—a moment that mirrors the clarity I’ve found in my transition. I anchor into the energy of their story—yes, I’m a bit clairvoyant in this way—guiding the conversation to intuitively unlock those juicy, unique details that might never emerge in a traditional interview. We dive beneath the surface together, following the natural current of their truth rather than forcing it into predetermined channels.
This method has been transformative for me as a host and my guests, who often tell me they’ve discovered a newfound confidence in their storytelling abilities. They walk away with a powerful piece that becomes a cornerstone for sharing their message authentically.
Isn’t that what we all seek in our personal and professional transitions—the space to tell our stories on our terms? Whether we’re evolving into new roles as mothers, entrepreneurs, or thought leaders, the journey becomes most meaningful when we allow our authentic voice to guide the way rather than conforming to others’ expectations of who we should be.
The Cost of Conformity
When we conform our stories to meet others’ expectations or mirror the creators we follow, we pay a tremendous price—personally and in the impact our message can have on the world. I’ve felt this cost me at various points in my career, particularly when I tried to package my message in ways that would seem more “marketable” or “on-trend.” The result? A watered-down version of my voice that didn’t fully resonate—not with me, and certainly not with my audience.
Take a moment to reflect on the most powerful stories that have moved you in your life. Were they carefully constructed to appeal to the widest possible audience? Or were they raw, vulnerable expressions of someone’s truth—sometimes uncomfortable but always genuine? I’m guessing it was the latter because that’s how human connection works.
My Personal Experience
In my work over the past 14 years, I’ve observed that the messages that resonate most deeply are never crafted to please everyone. The stories that create genuine connection emerge from a place of conviction and lived experience—much like the stories my podcast guests share and speak their truth.
When we filter our story through someone else’s lens—whether to fit certain standards or industry expectations—we dilute the very essence that makes our perspective valuable. It’s like trying to prepare for motherhood by following someone else’s exact blueprint—it might give you a false sense of security, but it won’t prepare you for your unique journey.
The world doesn’t need more polished, focus-grouped messaging; it needs conscious voices speaking directly to the people they seek to serve. Just as I’m preparing to welcome my daughter into the world in my own authentic way—not according to someone else’s rulebook—I encourage you to break free from the constraints of conformity in how you share your story.
Because here’s what I’ve learned through my personal transitions and professional experience: the cost of conformity isn’t just a diminished message—it’s the loss of the very connections you’re trying to create in the first place.
Speaking Your Truth—The Revolutionary Act of Being Genuinely You
Authentic expression isn’t just refreshing in today’s copy-paste world—it’s radical. It’s an act of courage that challenges the systems designed to make us sound the same. I’ve witnessed this firsthand in my guest interviews: when someone drops the script and speaks from the heart, the energy in the conversation transforms completely.
What’s fascinating is that this isn’t just my subjective experience—it’s science. When we encounter genuine communication, our brains process it differently than manufactured messaging. We experience higher oxytocin levels (the connection hormone) and dramatically increased trust and receptivity. Think about how you feel when you sense someone is being honest with you versus when you detect they give you a rehearsed response. The difference is palpable.
This isn’t just a feel-good theory—it’s a biological reality. Our nervous systems can detect authenticity, and we respond at a far deeper level than conscious thought. It’s why I’ve committed to showing up authentically through every transition in my life, including this journey into motherhood. I could craft a picture-perfect narrative about expecting a child after loss, but the reality—with all its messy emotions and contradictions—is what truly connects.
Research in behavioral economics shows that audiences connect more deeply with speakers who lead with vulnerability. When an audience senses that a creator is willing to break convention, they assign greater value and credibility to that person’s message because they’re willing to face potential criticism for speaking their truth.
What if the aspects of your story that you’re afraid to share will create the deepest connections with others?
The Hidden Power of Your Unique Voice—Resonating at Your Natural Frequency
Just as we each have a unique fingerprint, we each possess a distinctive voice formed by our lived experiences, cultural context, ethics, values, and natural expression patterns. With all its quirks, insights, and particular ways of seeing the world, your voice is irreplaceable. When we override our natural voice in favor of what we think we “should” sound like, we actively sabotage our impact.
I’ve seen this transformation countless times in my work: a client comes to me wanting to sound “professional” or “authoritative,” which usually means sounding like everyone else in their industry. But when they reclaim their natural voice—the one that emerges when they’re passionate and uninhibited—their message suddenly cuts through the noise.
Consider the concept of resonance from quantum physics: when an object vibrates at its natural frequency, it requires very little energy to produce a powerful effect. When forced to vibrate at unnatural frequencies, it requires enormous energy for minimal impact.
The same principle applies to your human-centric story. You create resonance effortlessly when you communicate from your center using your natural patterns and drawing on your unique lens. When you contort your message to fit external expectations, you exhaust yourself while creating far less impact.
I’ve experienced this myself throughout my entrepreneurial journey, especially now during pregnancy. The moments when I’ve tried to conform to how others approach business or motherhood have left me drained. But when I honor my own rhythm and speak from my unique perspective, I find I have more energy, more clarity, and—perhaps most importantly—more meaningful connections.
Your voice matters not despite its differences but because of them. In a world where algorithms reward sameness, your distinctive perspective is your greatest asset.
Breaking Free from the Measurement Trap—Valuing What Truly Matters
One of the most significant obstacles to authentic storytelling in our digital age is our collective obsession with metrics. As someone who has spent years in marketing and PR, I’ve seen how easily we can become enslaved to numbers—I’ve been there myself. We’ve been conditioned to believe that if something can’t be measured, it doesn’t matter. But here’s what I’ve discovered: the most profound impacts of authentic communication often evade conventional measurement entirely.
Think about it: has an algorithm ever captured the moment someone reads your words with tears in their eyes? Can a dashboard show you when your story gave someone the courage to make a life-changing decision? Of course not. Yet these are the real transformations that matter.
This measurement trap leads us down a dangerous path—we chase likes instead of creating change, count followers instead of fostering connection, and track engagement instead of enabling transformation. We contort our authentic voice to please the algorithm gods, sacrificing the very essence that makes our message powerful in the first place.
As I prepare for motherhood, I’ve been reflecting on how this applies beyond content creation. Society measures “successful” parenthood through external milestones and achievements, but the immeasurable moments—the connections, the growth, the love—are what truly matter. As I prepare to parent on my own terms, I invite you to create on yours.
Breaking free requires a radical act of faith—the willingness to value impact over validation and create from the heart in a way that connects with those you want to serve. It’s about trusting that when you speak your truth, the right people will hear it, regardless of what the metrics say.
Practical Approaches to Embracing Your Human-Centric Story
Through my journey in thought leadership and my conversations with countless authentic voices, I’ve discovered approaches that can help you break free from conformity and embrace your unique expression:
Establish your metrics of success that align with your authentic voice. Instead of tracking followers or likes, what if you measured the depth of your connections? What would change if you valued meaningful conversations sparked by your content or thoughtful messages from people who felt truly seen by your work?
I keep a “resonance journal” where I document those moments when someone reaches out to say my words were exactly what they needed. Sometimes, it’s a message from a podcast listener; other times, it’s a note from a client who experienced a breakthrough. A single genuine connection carries more impact than a thousand passive likes—and it reminds me why I do this work in the first place.
Create intentional pause points in your creation process. Before publishing anything, I take a breath and ask myself: “Am I creating this because it aligns with my truth or because I believe it will perform well?” This simple reflection has saved me from publishing content that wasn’t mine and realigned me with my authentic voice when algorithms or trends tried to pull me away. Try it—it might transform your relationship with creation.
Find your micro-community of truth-tellers who value authentic expression over performative content. I can’t overstate how critical this has been in my journey. These kindred spirits become your anchors when metrics seem to reward conformity and your cheerleaders when you dare to break the mold. They remind you you’re not crazy about valuing depth over reach and meaning over metrics.
Your Human-Centric Story, Your Terms
When you begin to value the immeasurable impacts of telling your story over conforming to norms, something magical happens—you reclaim the power to share your message on your terms. Your worth is inherent. Your credibility is established through your authentic voice. And the impact of your story is profound precisely because only you can tell it uniquely—through the lens of your specific experiences, insights, and wisdom.
As I embrace this new chapter of my life—preparing to welcome my daughter while evolving my business in alignment with my deepest values—I’m more convinced than ever that our human-centric stories are our greatest gifts to the world. Our human-centric stories will always have the greatest impact when shared with courage, vulnerability, and unwavering truth.
Remember, your human-centric story isn’t just waiting to be told—it’s waiting to transform both the teller and the listener. It’s waiting to create connections that transcend metrics and impacts that defy measurement. It’s waiting for you to break free from the constraints of conformity and speak your truth.
Because in the end, that’s not just good thought leadership—it’s revolutionary.
